OVERVIEW

The International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) has engaged Bridging Peoples to support them in a range of projects in Timor-Leste, including conducting a final evaluation of their Rural Women’s Development Program, providing training and mentoring for their local partners, and undertaking assessments and research.

There is a major divide between urban and rural development in Timor-Leste, with most funding going to support urban areas, with very limited investment in rural livelihoods. The focus of Bridging Peoples’ work has been primarily supporting IWDA in how they engage with rural women’s groups, to provide new income streams for rural women, while encouraging changing gender norms in rural households in which the potential of both men and women are supported.

Key activities supporting IWDA work have included:

  • Conducting a final evaluation of the Rural Women’s Development Program, evaluating local NGO partners’ work in supporting women’s community groups and other economic initiatives.
  • Conducting an assessment and providing strategic advice on IWDA’s future programming to support women’s community groups.
  • Providing training and mentoring to local NGO partners to support them in their community engagement work.
  • Working with local NGO partner Centru Comunidade Covalima (CCC) to conduct a Gender Market Assessment in Suai market, and supporting CCC in followup advocacy with Municipal government.

IWDA has worked with Bridging Peoples on a number of occasions. It was a pleasure working with them. They were very professional and delivered timely, high quality work. They were warm and consultative, building good relationships with IWDA and our partners within a short time period. They bring an excellent level of analysis, particularly in contextualizing the findings and recommendations for the local context.”
